Wethers back McCall

David Wetherall says he would love to play under Stuart McCall next season.

Chairman Julian Rhodes wants to speak to McCall once Sheffield United’s season is over.

And Wetherall says he would be delighted if the Bantams legend agreed to become manager.

He told the Telegraph & Argus: ‘I would be absolutely delighted if we got Stuart McCall here as manager.

‘It would create such an interest in the football club around the city and that can only be good.

‘If Stuart came in, it would leave me free to go back and play. And hopefully with him in charge we could go on and really start moving in the right direction again.

If McCall can’t be persuaded to come to Valley Parade, Wetherall might be offered the post on a permanent basis.

He said: ‘If the chairman wants me to be in charge then obviously I’ve got some thinking to do. I would be honoured but it’s not a case of that or nothing for me.

‘People think that once you’re in charge there’s no way back but I would be extremely comfortable if someone such as Stuart came in and I went back to playing.

‘But my experience here in charge of the football club has not put me off managing one iota. Not in terms of wanting to do the job one day nor in terms of my ability in being able to do it.’
