Conlon Signs On

Stuart McCall made his first close season signing when Barry Conlon agreed to stay around the club for a further six months.

His new contract, which runs out in January is clearly a carrot to inspire the big Irishman to demonstrate in the first half of next season that he is worth keeping faith in.

Speaking to the Telegraph & Argus the seven-goal man said ‘there are other clubs in this league and the one above that I could have gone to but I’m delighted to be here.

That’s the main thing at this stage of my career. I want success and I believe that can happen at this club.

This season’s been frustrating for me but I’m as happy as Larry to stay because I think the next one will be good.

The six-month contract works in favour of both the club and me but I’m confident enough in myself and back my ability to take it on from there.’

Whilst Barry has become a cult figure in some sections if we are serious about promotion we need someone who can be relied on to find the back of the net and in whom the management have confidence. Stuart now has Conlon, Peter Thorne, Billy Topp, Omar Daley and Luke Medley as his attacking quintet but is clearly after another option as Conlon continued ‘the gaffer will have his own ideas about who he wants to bring in and he spoke to me about strengthening the squad.

He’s looking for another striker but I’m happy with that. I don’t mind that whatsoever because I am up for the challenge.

Everybody says the same things at this time of the year about having a good season next time but I’d rather be here than at the clubs who just talk about it. I really believe we can be successful.’

This six month contract gives Barry the chance to get a bit of permanency in his life and maybe use the pre-season period to stay fit as it took him a while to look like he ought at the start of the year.

‘This time last year I didn’t have a clue what was happening. I was away on my summer holiday when I got the phone call from the gaffer to come here.

At least now I won’t have to leave it until the last minute. I’ve got a head start on people, which is always a bonus, and I’ll make sure I stay on top of things and come back fit for pre-season.’

It’s the first signing of the close-season, it’s hardly a very surprising one but these things have to start somewhere!

great result for club and player

His work rate & ability to lift the generally quiet crowd this season deserves a new contract even if he has missed some sitters (then again so has Thorne in amonst his quality finishes). Hopefully a settled start will benefit Big Baz even if he does have to come off the bench to make an impact.

I am over the moon that Barry is as happy as Larry he deserved a contract on effort alone.
