Bradford City reward Kyle Nix

Another one signs up for next season following the close of the 07/08 League Two campaign.

After Barry Conlon’s acceptance of a 6 month contract earlier in the week Stuart McCall has persuaded Kyle Nix to stick around Valley Parade for next year.

For a player who was almost shown the door at the start of the season it is a remarkable turnaround. Perhaps like no other player in the side Nix has epitomised the spirit of McCall that many have felt has lacked this season.

And he has managed to win over the Ginger Messiah, not only in his commitment to the cause but particularly in his goalscoring contribution from midfield. The 8 goals he has netted haven’t really dramatically changed the outcome of any games (we’ve only won once when he’s scored, and that in the comprehensive destruction of Shrewsbury) which is poorer in comparison to the released Eddie Johnson.

But in his first fullish season of professional football he has shown himself more than capable of competing at this level. There are those, and I am one of them, who have found his home performances incredibly frustrating and he has a tendency to point fingers at others rather than acknowledge his own mistakes but that self-belief is something that can be a sign of quality.

Stuart obviously thinks there’s potential and at only a slight amount more than his previous contract you’ve got to say this is good business for the Bantams and a good move for the former Sheffield United player who must now deliver on the promise he has, to earn the right to stay in Bradford beyond next July.

Speaking to the Telegraph & Argus his gaffer said ‘I think he even surprised himself by how many games he has played. We’ve really seen him come on and flourish but that’s a testament to his ability and his character.

I said I couldn’t see him playing left side because he lacked natural pace; and I couldn’t see him in central midfield because he didn’t have the height or the physical attributes.

But he just went out there to show me how capable he was and that’s what I want to see in a player.

When you put down a challenge, you want to see people overcome them and Nixy has done that.

But he’s set his standards now. He can’t come back next season thinking he has already made it – but I know that’s not going to happen.’

Good luck Kyle and hopefully you and Bullock can really bring some rigidity to what has at times this season been quite a holey midfield.

Just rewards for his efforts – prbbably showed more heart & determination than any other player over the season. He showed good skill & tenacity in the tackle for a small player and has done surprisingly well when playing in the middle of the park plus his goals too. Happy to see him get a contract.
