Julian Rhodes has hit back at those who claim he is to blame for Bradford City’s predicament.
Some say he should have not sold Jermaine Johnson or allowed Dean Windass to go to Hull on loan.
But Mr Rhodes insists he had to take drastic action to keep the club afloat.
He told the Telgraph & Argus: ‘Part of the money from Dean’s loan to Hull was used to pay the tax bill from the December wages, which we wouldn’t have been able to do otherwise.
‘The sale of Jermaine paid all the wages and other bills at the end of January.
‘I don’t think people need spelling out the implications if we hadn’t been able to do that.
‘Something had to be done to keep us trading.’
City still expect to lose £600,000 this year despite the Johnson and Windass deals.
Mr Rhodes said: ‘I have to do whatever I can in order to keep the club going. If that means selling our best players, then that’s what I’m going to have to do.
‘People should ask themselves what’s the alternative?’ Some of the comments I’ve heard, like where’s the money gone’, are just downright insulting.
‘Ninety-five per cent of the fans have been brilliant and, let’s be right, they’ve not had a lot to cheer about in the last few years. They have been very good about it.
‘Unfortunately, as in any walk of life, it’s always the five per cent who speak the loudest and speak with so-called authority, even though they don’t really know what’s going on.
‘Before Deano went, we’d taken eight points from his previous 13 games with only one win. How do these people know that had he stayed we’d be doing any better?
‘But I just think that argument is irrelevant. The facts of the matter are I had to do what I had to do to keep the club going.’
