Joe Colbeck Gets Three Match Ban

It’s the last we’ve seen of 2007/08’s Player of the Year ’til next season after his red card on Saturday.

Whilst it is undoubtedly true that Dean Lewington got away with murder both before and after the incident that saw City reduced to ten men there was little doubt in my mind that it was a just punishment. Unfortunately the ginger left back’s hair acted like a red rag to a bull with Colbeck unable to keep his temper, not for the first time in his young career.

Whilst accounting for the breaking of my fiancee’s heart (Joe being her favourite player for the effort he puts in), the youngster was clearly insistent to his management that he hadn’t acted maliciously and had anticipated merely a yellow card.

Rookie Karl Evans disagreed and showed a straight red to create a cauldron of atmosphere for the rest of the game that certainly led to an enjoyable day out.

Speaking after the decision to give Joe a three match ban that will see him miss Saturday’s trip to Wycombe and the first two games of next year, Stuart McCall said to the Telegraph & Argus ‘I was hoping it would be just one game but a reckless challenge means three. It’s really bad news for us and for Joe.

I think the noise made it sound worse. There was a loud bang when the players came together.

I don’t know whether the referee actually saw the incident or just heard the noise.

Joe was disappointed when he thought he was going to get a yellow card and couldn’t believe he was sent off.’

Hopefully the club will help Joe to work on maintaining his composure over the summer so that in the heat of next year’s promotion battle he can retaliate in the best way possible, by reaching his full potential and using his ability to silence his critics.

POtY he may be, and a heart on his sleeve her has, however Joe will learn when to get angry and when to get even. Unfortunatley the past master of it (Deano) isn’t here to show him that rope!!

Well said Capn, unlike some of the biased eejits around me I thought it was a very nasty challenge which deserved a red card. I’m told there was a picture in the T&A showing Lewington doing Joe earlier in the game but there’s no excuse for that sort of retaliation & was only going to get him sent off. I seem to remember tis isn’t the first time Joe has had a case of red mist & flown into challenges. He’s still a young lad & as the Capn said he needs to learn to be more subtle about getting even.
