As the season wound up Kyle Nix, Nicky Law, Dean Furman and Joe Colbeck planned their summer holidays. The fear of swine flu didn’t put them off and as we bade them farewell we hoped tbhat we’d be welcoming the majority of them back to Valley Parade.

A few weeks later and the season approaches. Kyle Nix was first to go. Released with the offer of a pre season trial. He is still without a club.

Nicky Law, a class above League Two, has signed for Rotherham.

We thought that meant Stuart was putting all his eggs in a South African basket. But last week Stuart gave up on Dean Furman. A long chat between the two on Sunday suggests it wsdhog only yesterday the decision was finally made. One for the future, the former Chelsea and Rangers dynamo has signed a three year contract with Dave Penney’s Oldham.

And the circumstances surrounding a player the former Darlington supremo borrowed will no doubt have raised interest at the Lancastrian club. Joe Colbeck has turned down a pay rise and s three year contract to be left playing on a week to week basis.

Agents seem involved in that decision as Joe clearly wanted better terms or not to be tied to the club he loves for three years. I believe Joe to possess a great deal of potential. I wouldn’t begrudge his wanting to play at a higher level or for less critical fans. No doubt the loss of his mates will have hit him hard but hopefully he can take the opportunity his insecure future provides and be integral to s successful season.

Should he do so we could be waving farewell to the last Bantam who went to Mexico in the January window for a fee set at tribunal rather than one recognising the length of his future commitment. And that will be substantially less. Latics, you might be in for a Spring bargain…
