Phil Parkinson remain interested in signing former Blackpool loanee Tony McMahon and remains interest in another ‘keeper with Sunderland’s Jordan Pickford again mention as a possible option?

McMahon was released by Blackpool, along with virtually the whole squad, so the 29-year-old officially becomes a free agent next month at which time Parkinson’s told the Telegraph & Argus he hopes to bring him in.

‘I would like to keep Tony if I can. I thought he did very well and showed his versatility and he has good football intelligence.

‘I’ve spoken to Tony and to his agent and we’re looking to do something at some point.

‘Obviously with the things going on behind the scenes at Blackpool, that’s put contract discussions on hold. But I hope we can sort things in the not too distant future.’

There was definitely a versatility about McMahon that would make him an asset, he’s got plenty of experience at League 1 level and is also more than capable of performing at Championship level too so wouldn’t be out of place if we can complete a step up next season.

McMahon is likely to have options but I’m confident we’ll see him return this summer…. Another that could return is Pickford, if Sunderland are willing to loan him out again? If they are Parkinson would certainly be interested.

We’re not desperate for another ‘keeper but the decision to release Matt Urwin this week leaves and opening and we tried to bring in Walsall’s Richard O’Donnell but he signed for Wigan instead.

If we can bring in Pickford on loan again he wouldn’t be against this but has faith in Ben Williams’ ability and we’ve also got Lee Butler so it’s not a priority but a third ‘keeper, on a ‘best value’ option is still wanted.

‘I’m not sure what they will do with Jordan, whether they send him out again or keep him as the number two. He has had that taste of playing now, so it’s going to be difficult. We’ll have to what and see.

‘At this stage we’re speaking to a number of players in a lot of positions. But we’ve already got a very good keeper in Ben Williams.

‘This time last year we didn’t have a keeper signed and the goalkeeping coach situation wasn’t resolved. Now we have Lee Butler under contract and Ben here, so we’re ahead of that.

‘We need one more keeper and we will look to get the best value.’
