Phil Parkinson was left delighted that ‘Mezzer’ committed his future to Bradford this week after James Meredith, surprisingly really, signed a new contract.

Highly expected to leave Valley Parade this summer, technically his contract had expired and he was officially a free agent from the start of this month, he was back at the training ground on Monday to sign a new one-year deal.

Parkinson was seeking competition for summer signing Alan Sheehan, making no secret of this, but he seemed to rule out a Meredith return recently but following further talks an agreement was found, much to his pleasure.

The Bantams boss told the official website: ‘I’m delighted that Mezzer has signed again with the club.

‘It was no secret that we wanted another left back in the squad for next season following the signing of Alan Sheehan earlier in the summer.

‘After sitting down with James recently following his return from Australia, I have no doubt that he was the best option out there for us.’

Injury prevented him for featuring much beyond January last season, had he remained fit it was strongly rumoured that he might have made it into the Australian world cup squad but it wasn’t to be for the 26-year-old.

Did offers from other league 1 clubs, and championship outfits, come in for Meredith do you think? Regardless he is back and that can’t be a bad thing!
