Stuart seems to be losing patience with the Mansfield striker who is being linked to at least five clubs.
Having already held what were described as ‘positive’ talks with the player the Bradford City manager is keen to get a decision made before he misses out on other potential signings.
However, with Rotherham, Lincoln, Grimsby and his current club Mansfield, all known to be in the running for his signature the 25-goal hitman can clearly weigh up his options and take his time.
Stuart McCall said to the Telegraph & Argus ‘we`ve had a positive discussion with Michael as have numerous clubs, which is his prerogative, and now he`s taking a final break to think things over before making his mind up when pre-season starts.
It`s understandable he doesn`t want to rush because of the different options but I`ve also told Michael that we`ve got to move on in our striker search in the mean time.’
And it sounds like Stuart has done just that, not only with the confirmed negotiations with Luke Beckett (that qappear to have reached a cul de sac and look like they’re going nowhere) but also with the revelation that there is more going on behind the scenes than we know. Stuart continued ‘I`ve spoken to four different strikers anyway and plan to talk to a couple more next week. We are shopping round, just like Michael.
We will be speaking to other centre forwards now while he is away and if one jumps out at me then we will not hang about to make a decision.
It`s not that I`m saying no to him. I was pleased with how our discussions went and think we`ve got a chance.’
Thus far Stuart has signed people with a desire to play for City, possibly for less money than they might be offered elsewhere. For the Becketts and Bouldings of the footballing world it seems that the pay packet might be the deciding factor rather than the quality of management, quality of fans, or future prospects around them.
But the lure of playing football at a higher level may also be something that needs to be factored into the 30year old’s decision with Stuart continuing ‘the lad has got plenty of clubs in our division after him and some from League One as well. It`s down to him to mull them over while he is away.
We respect that Michael wants to take his time over things but he also has to respect our position and if his decision went against us we might have missed out on other options while we wait for him to come back.’
I hope we can see some movement in the transfer market one way or the other. I hate pre-season uncertainty!
