Bradford were beaten by Sunderland on Saturday and are now preparing for a meeting with their North East rivals Newcastle, who come to Valley Parade on Wednesday.

Stuart McCall is well aware of the international quality his counterpart Rafa Benitez has to select from, knowing each player is worth tens of millions of pounds each, so he’s looking to ‘be realistic’ about Bradford’s chances.

However, having salvaged pride from the second half showing against Sunderland, McCall’s looking for a strong display, against a club City have a good relationship with, telling the Official Website plenty could be gained even if the result doesn’t favour the Bantams.

‘We go into Wednesday night knowing that we are going to be up against players worth tens of millions of pounds, so we have to be realistic. Equally though, we still want to go out there and put in the strongest display possible. The result might not necessarily go our way Wednesday, but we still have things we want to get out of the game.’

Adding: ‘We have a great relationship with Newcastle. They allowed us to bring Alex (Gilliead) and Haris Vuckic to the club last season. We obviously now have Alex back here as well for this season. We look forward to welcoming them to the stadium on Wednesday and to a challenging encounter. Hopefully it is one that we can get plenty out of.’

Bradford aren’t going to face sides of Newcastle’s standing and ability week-in-week-out in League One this season but it will still be an important fixture heading into this upcoming season.

McCall continued: ‘Although we won’t be up against the standard of Newcastle’s quality once the league season starts, there is still the opportunity to use this fixture to keep building things up ahead of the new campaign.’

An assessment will be made on Dominic Poleon, following an ankle injury on Saturday, but Timothee Dieng is again doubtful, missing the last two due to an ongoing calf problem. Charlie Wyke’s hamstring keeps him out but Alex Jones is expected back after a minor groin problem.
