Bradford City 2-0 Grimsby Town

Bradford City gained a valuable win today, lifting them to 7th in a packed league 2 table. The win leaves them 4 points away from the automatic promotion places.

City made their fans wait for it, though, despite playing against 10 men for 70 minutes of the match. Nicky Law broke the deadlock on 75 minutes, at the end of a game in which City piled a massive 27 shots on goal, and won 10 corners. The second was added with the last kick of the game by Steve Jones.

Law and the on-loan Dean Furman, in the middle of the park, succeeded where so many Bradford midfield combinations have struggled this season, and controlled the centre of the pitch. Unfortunately, they weren`t able to really control the game, as Bradford used their massive advantage in possession to channel the ball to Jones, who squandered many opportunities during the course of the game, to the frustration of fans.

His goal came as all 10 of his opponents were at the other end of the pitch, a simple tap-in to give the scoreline a gloss that didn`t reflect the difficulty City had in breaking down their bottom of the table opponents.

Grimsby had come to nick a win or steal a point, and set about it until some good work in the centre of the park released Michael Boulding into space, with only Robert Atkinson to beat. Atkinson took the ‘by any means necessary` approach, bundling Boulding to the floor, and ref Chris Sarginson didn`t hesitate in showing the red card for a foul by the last man.

From the on, despite determined efforts from Stuart Elliott (another loanee), Grimsby failed to make any impression. They succeeded in holding back wave after wave of ineffective wing attacks from Bradford City, until Law received the ball on the edge of the six yard box. Keeping his head, he drew the keeper in and slotted the ball home, to the relief of home fans. As Grimsby threw everything into saving the draw, they left their half empty and, after a Barry Conlon howler from 3 yards out, Jones was finally able to justify McCall`s confidence in not subbing him at half time.
