Five things you may not have realised about yesterday’s result.

1. A 1-0 home win is very rare between City and Walsall, in fact this is only the 3rd time in 32 games in all competitions, the last one at Valley Parade the winner was scored by Neil Tolson back in October 1995. The other 1-0 home win was when Gary Birch scored for Walsall in December 2003.

2. The winning goal scored by Billy Clarke was his first goal in 15 games, his last going back to November where Clarke opened the scoring home to Rochdale, a game we went on to win 4-0. A nice reminder Billy can still play a part in the play offs.

3. In both fixtures between City and Walsall this season, Kevin Toner was named on the home bench.

4. The win puts City in joint 3rd place with Fleetwood on 69 points. Fleetwood do have a game in hand and a better goal difference of 2, but they have only won once in their last 5 games, the Trawlermen’s last taste of victory came away at Walsall last month.

5. Only 4 players started yesterday’s home win that started the 4-0 drubbing of Walsall last season, James Meredith, Rory McArdle, Tony McMahon and Josh Cullen. Billy Clarke came on as sub last season with minutes to go, he is the only City survivor from the bench that day.

Around the grounds with the exes.

1. Jon McLaughlin kept a clean sheet away to Huddersfield town as they claimed a last minute goal pulling themselves clear of the relegation zone by 4 points and increasing Town’s gap to automatic promotion to 9 points. This was in a game where Huddersfield had 70% possession. Ex City star Nahki Wells came off the bench just before the hour mark for Huddersfield Town.

2. Gary Jones who celebrates his 40th in 2 months time scored the opener for Altrincham away to Salford City. Unfortunately it wasn’t enough as Salford City ran out 2-1 winners. Gary Jones is on loan to Altrincham from Southport.

3 . Paul Anderson rescued a point 3 minutes into injury time for Northampton away to Rochdale, a game which also included ex City striker Steve Davies who failed to add to his tally of 13 for Rochdale this season.

4. Billy Knott scored the only goal as Lincoln beat Bromley at home to reclaim top spot from Tranmere Rovers.

5. Ex City Loanee Louis Moult scored the opener for Motherwell away to Rangers, his 15th this season. This will make it 4 consecutive seasons Moult has scored at least 15 goals throughout the season.

Also if you missed it……

To get on the score sheet – Simon Ainge (Harrogate) and Francois Zoko (Yeovil).

Manager Mark Bower is continuing Bradford Park Avenue’s revival with a crucial 1-0 away win at Alfreton Town.
