What does the demise of Bradford & Bingley mean for the Bantams?

Bradford City have had a long standing relationship with Bradford & Bingley, the latest British victim of the ‘credit crunch’. Before the mortgage lender stepped up as shirt sponsors the now-named Coral Windows Stadium was known as the Bradford & Bingley Stadium.

Last summer the deal was renegotiated for two seasons with the arrangement not scheduled to end until the 2009/10 season.

This year’s monies are all paid for but now that the bank is a nationalised institution, as with Northern Rock, it will be interesting to know whether the arrangement will continue.

Speaking to the Telegraph & Argus, co-chairman Julian Rhodes said ‘it`s a sad day for the company and I`m sure the new owners have got more important things to worry about in the next couple of weeks than our shirts` sponsorship.

It might be an issue towards next season but we will wait and see what develops.

We are obviously very sympathetic to Bradford & Bingley`s plight. Having been in that situation a couple of times in the recent past, we can appreciate the difficulties and uncertainty and hope that it works out well.’
(I’m not necessarily sure whether our two administrations are in the same league as what has befallen Bradford & Bingley…)

Bradford City now join Newcastle United and West Ham United in having shirt sponsors who have suffered a dramatic change in fortunes over the last 3 or 4 months. As the season continues it will be interesting to see whether we are joined by anyone else.
